A magnificent early 19th-century American Empire secretary bookcase crafted in richly figured flame-grain mahogany. Dating to circa 1820–1830, this impressive piece showcases beautiful bookmatched mahogany veneers, creating a striking mirrored grain pattern with natural variations of light and dark tones.
The secretary desk opens to reveal two hinged leather writing surfaces with concealed storage compartments beneath. The fitted interior features a row of document cubbies, a quill tray with a hidden compartment, and a designated space for an inkwell. The lid and three central drawers can be secured together with a locking mechanism.
The upper bookcase section features adjustable shelving and working locks. Its substantial form is complemented by the strong lines of American Empire design, including ogee and broad quarter-round moldings, along with delicately hand-carved demilune mullions that add an elegant decorative touch.
In excellent condition, this exceptional antique combines practical storage, a functional writing area, and impressive early American craftsmanship.
