Beautiful original 1988 color reduction woodcut titled "Whispering Ridge" by acclaimed American printmaker Gordon Mortensen (b. 1938). Hand-signed, titled, dated, and numbered 34/130 in pencil by the artist.
The composition depicts a secluded mountain meadow in Utah's Wasatch Range, near Eden and Paradise, during the spring wildflower season. Vibrant purple lupines, penstemon, and other wildflowers fill the foreground, with rolling green hills and dramatic blue-violet mountain peaks in the distance.
Mortensen is a highly regarded American printmaker celebrated for his mastery of the reduction woodcut technique. His work is represented in major museum collections, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
Mortensen is particularly celebrated for his extraordinarily intricate reduction woodcuts, a demanding printmaking technique in which a single woodblock is progressively carved and printed with successive layers of color. Once each color is printed, additional portions of the block are carved away to prepare for the next. Because the original block is gradually destroyed during the process, the completed edition cannot be reproduced from it.
For "Whispering Ridge," Mortensen employed an impressive 28 individual colors achieved through 23 separate press runs, producing the remarkable depth, texture, and subtle color variations visible throughout the composition.
A wonderful example of Mortensen's meticulous craftsmanship and distinctive approach to American landscape printmaking.
