An exceptionally charming matching pair of vintage American slipper chairs by C.R. Laine Furniture Company of Hickory, North Carolina, distinguished by their sculptural rolled backs, beautifully pleated rosette ends, generously cushioned seats, and richly textured ivory-and-beige woven upholstery.
Documented by original C.R. Laine manufacturer labels bearing the date June 28, 1993, this handsome pair represents the enduring appeal of American traditional upholstered furniture, combining established North Carolina furniture-making heritage with elegant proportions, sophisticated textile detailing, and inviting comfort.
Their armless silhouettes, substantial scroll-top backs, and fully tailored skirts offer a timeless decorative character particularly suited to English Country, Grandmillennial, Ralph Lauren-inspired, and thoughtfully layered traditional interiors.
C.R. Laine — American Furniture-Making Heritage
Founded in 1958 by Clarence Roseman, C.R. Laine Furniture Company began as a small North Carolina furniture operation and developed into an established American manufacturer specializing in custom upholstered seating.
Based in Hickory, North Carolina, one of America's most historically important furniture-making centers, the company became known for its bench-crafted upholstery, refined silhouettes, carefully selected textiles, and traditional furniture construction.
Its longstanding emphasis on upholstery craftsmanship and tailored design is reflected in this beautifully coordinated pair, with its distinctive scroll-back architecture, generous cushions, intricately gathered detailing, and carefully pleated skirts.
Both chairs retain original manufacturer identification, connecting them directly to C.R. Laine's Hickory furniture-making heritage and providing valuable documentation of their vintage origins.
Sculptural Scroll Backs & Button-Centered Rosettes
The defining feature of these elegant chairs is their beautifully pronounced scroll-back design.
Each upholstered backrest rises into a substantial horizontal roll that curves gracefully backward, creating a distinctive silhouette with sculptural presence from every angle.
The scroll ends are finished with intricately arranged radial fabric pleats converging around coordinating fabric-covered buttons. These decorative rosettes introduce a particularly refined element of traditional upholstery craftsmanship, recalling the carefully tailored details associated with classic upholstered furnishings.
The substantial scrolls give the chairs a more architectural profile than conventional slipper chairs, while their softly rounded forms retain an inviting, comfortable character.
Richly Textured Ivory & Beige Jacquard-Style Upholstery
The chairs are upholstered in an elegant two-tone textile featuring raised ivory botanical scrollwork arranged in decorative stripes against a warm beige ground.
The dimensional woven pattern incorporates interlacing vine-like motifs and narrow dotted borders, creating a sophisticated interplay of texture, light, and subtle color.
Rather than relying on a bold print, the upholstery achieves its decorative richness through the contrast between the raised ivory ornamental bands and the softly colored background.
The pattern continues across the sculptural rolled backs, generously padded cushions, fully upholstered frames, and tailored skirts, creating a cohesive and beautifully balanced presentation.
The neutral palette makes the chairs remarkably versatile, particularly for interiors incorporating antique wood furnishings, traditional artwork, layered textiles, floral patterns, and richly collected decorative objects.
Generously Cushioned Seating
Each chair features a substantial boxed seat cushion with softly rounded front corners and neatly tailored seams.
The cushions have a generous, inviting appearance, contributing to the chairs' comfortable, softly structured silhouette.
The patterned upholstery is thoughtfully arranged, with decorative stripes extending across the seating surfaces before transitioning vertically along the cushion fronts.
The original upholstery labels document the seat cushion filling specification as 80% urethane foam and 20% polyester fibers, providing additional information about the chairs' construction.
The armless design allows for flexible placement while maintaining the generous character of traditional upholstered seating.
Beautifully Tailored Full-Length Skirts
The chairs' traditional silhouettes are completed by elegant full-length skirts extending nearly to the floor.
Rather than loose, gathered fabric, the skirts feature structured corner pleats, overlapping tailored panels, and carefully defined seams that contribute to their refined appearance.
The ivory-and-beige woven pattern continues through the pleated sections, creating visual continuity between the upholstered backs, seat decks, and lower bases.
Small portions of the dark-finished wooden legs remain discreetly visible beneath the skirts.
This combination of sculptural upper detailing and softly tailored lower proportions gives the chairs their distinctive American traditional character.
Beautifully Finished from Every Angle
The upholstery detailing extends across the fully upholstered rear backrests, where the pronounced horizontal scrolls and coordinating woven stripes create an especially attractive silhouette.
The decorative fabric continues vertically down the backs and across the rear skirts, allowing the chairs to be incorporated into open seating arrangements where their rear profiles remain visible.
Their coordinated forms make them equally effective positioned together as a pair or arranged as complementary accents within a larger interior.
Original Manufacturer Documentation & Provenance
Both chairs retain original C.R. Laine manufacturer identification, including the company's distinctive woven label and upholstery law documentation.
The surviving labels identify C.R. Laine Furniture Company, Inc., of Hickory, North Carolina, and bear the date June 28, 1993.
They also preserve information about the original upholstery filling specifications, providing an unusually useful documentary record for a pair of vintage upholstered chairs.
The manufacturer labels establish the pair's connection to C.R. Laine and support their identification as early-1990s American furniture.
A Refined Pair for the Collected Interior
With their gracefully rolled backs, elaborate pleated rosettes, textured neutral upholstery, and fully tailored skirts, these chairs possess the relaxed sophistication that makes traditional American upholstered furniture so appealing.
They are particularly well suited to English Country, Grandmillennial, classic American, and Nancy Meyers-inspired interiors, where warmth, comfort, texture, and thoughtful layering define the design.
Position the pair opposite a sofa in a traditional living room, within a bedroom sitting area, beside a fireplace, or as complementary seating in a library or collected guest room.
Their ivory-and-beige palette pairs beautifully with antique mahogany, walnut, and oak furniture, gilt mirrors, floral textiles, traditional rugs, and decorative objects collected over time.
A distinctive and beautifully documented pair of vintage American upholstered chairs, offering the heritage of C.R. Laine, sculptural traditional design, and enduring versatility for the thoughtfully furnished home.

Laine manufacturer labels bearing the date June 28, 1993. The upholstery shows cosmetic wear consistent with age and previous use. One reversible seat cushion has two small reddish marks of unknown origin, possibly lipstick, on one side; the cushion can be turned over for presentation. The other chair has two small white marks on its upper rolled backrest. There is also localized darkening and light surface soiling in frequently contacted areas of the fabric, particularly around the outer corners and upper backrests. No cleaning or stain-removal treatments have been attempted. The textured ivory-and-beige upholstery retains its decorative woven pattern, and the chairs present attractively as a coordinated pair. No structural damage or issues reported. Please review photographs for complete condition details. less
