Joining the company at just 17, he would follow in his father’s footsteps to become head of design and manager, fundamentally shaping what we now know as pastoe. Braakman was instrumental in introducing a modernist philosophy focused on clean lines, functional forms, and high-quality materials.a turning point came in 1947, when braakman visited the united states to study new manufacturing methods, including a stint at george nelson associates. Inspired by the pioneering work of charles & ray eames, he returned to the netherlands with groundbreaking techniques for curved plywood finished with oak and birch veneer—giving birth to the iconic sb02 dining chair.as an active member of the influential goed wonen group, braakman helped redefine the post-war dutch interior. Heavy, dark oak made way for light, airy, and minimalist pieces tailored for modern living. This sober yet flexible approach became the trademark style of ums pastoe, culminating in successful modular designs like the made-to-measure cabinet system and the acclaimed japanese series. Today, braakman’s functional masterpieces remain highly sought after, with several pieces preserved in the permanent collection of the stedelijk museum amsterdam.
