An impressive antique Japanese isho-dansu dating from the Meiji period, 1868–1912, constructed as a two-part clothing chest for storing kimono, textiles and personal belongings.

The cabinet consists of two separate stackable sections. Two broad drawers occupy the upper section, while the lower part contains two medium-sized drawers and three smaller compartments. This varied arrangement provides a surprising amount of practical storage and reflects the functional character of traditional Japanese tansu.

The wooden cabinet is finished in a deep, muted reddish-brown tone that has developed a beautifully weathered patina through age and use. Wear, variations in colour and small marks across the surface give the piece its authentic and timeworn appearance.

The front is richly fitted with handcrafted ironwork. Large decorative plates depict stylised birds and botanical motifs, while the drawers retain their characterful iron handles. The dark metal creates a powerful contrast with the warm reddish-brown wood.

Carrying handles are fitted to the sides, allowing the two sections to be moved separately. Japanese tansu were traditionally constructed to remain relatively portable, for example during relocation or in an emergency.

Today, this isho-dansu makes a highly functional and decorative piece of furniture for a living room, bedroom, entrance hall or shop interior. It can be used as a chest of drawers for clothing and textiles, or as a distinctive storage cabinet for tableware, documents or collected objects.

In attractive antique condition, with clear signs of use, wear, discolouration, scratches, minor losses and patina consistent with the 1868–1912 period and its original function.
