An elegant antique Japanese isho-dansu dating from the Taishō period, 1912–1926, constructed as a two-part clothing chest for storing kimono, textiles and personal belongings.

The cabinet consists of two separate stackable sections containing a total of four broad drawers. This type of construction is known in Japan as a kasane-dansu, literally meaning a ‘chest on chest’. Each section could be carried and moved independently, making the piece both practical and portable.

The drawer fronts display beautiful natural grain in restrained brown tones. Their simple design is accented by dark metal corner fittings, horizontal bands and circular lock plates. Each drawer retains sturdy iron handles mounted on decoratively shaped backplates.

The combination of clean lines, visible timber and functional metalwork gives the tansu a calm and balanced appearance. Subtle variations in colour, patina and wear reflect its original use and enhance its authentic character.

Isho-dansu were traditionally used for the careful storage of kimono and other valuable textiles. Carrying handles on the sides allowed the separate sections to be transported relatively easily, for example during a move.

Today, this cabinet makes a highly functional storage piece for clothing, linen, tableware, documents or collected objects. Its relatively compact proportions make it particularly suitable for a bedroom, living room, entrance hall, shop or Japanese-inspired interior.

In good antique condition, with normal wear, discolouration, scratches, minor losses and patina consistent with the 1912–1926 period and its original use.
