An impressive antique Japanese hibachi dating from the Meiji period, 1868–1912, fashioned from a substantial section of tree trunk and retaining its original copper liner.

The organically shaped exterior largely follows the natural contours of the wood. Its undulating rim, vertical grooves and irregular form give the object a powerful, almost sculptural presence. The deep dark-brown colour and visible grain reflect many years of use and natural ageing.

Inside is a spacious copper container that was originally filled with ash and glowing charcoal. Age and heat have given the copper a lively patina, with warm brown tones, dark traces of use and blue-green oxidation. The accompanying metal accessories shown in the photographs are included.

A hibachi, literally meaning ‘fire bowl’, was traditionally used in Japanese interiors as a local source of warmth. It was a familiar everyday object, yet its materials and craftsmanship could also give it an important decorative presence within the home.

Today, this example can be displayed beautifully as a planter, cachepot for a bonsai, decorative vessel or independent work of art. Its natural form, rich patina and visible age relate particularly well to the Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetic, while its utilitarian origins also make it a strong mingei object.

In good antique condition, with wear, discolouration, oxidation, minor drying cracks, small losses and natural irregularities consistent with the 1868–1912 period, the materials and its original function.
