Hand-built from thick planks of indigenous old-growth pine, the chest features traditional dovetail joinery, a hinged plank top secured with hand-forged strap iron, reinforcing molding around the base and low shaped feet. Hand-forged iron folding handles mounted on both sides speak to its original purpose as a portable storage chest and provide handsome decorative accents against the painted surface.
Layers of black and ivory paint have worn naturally through generations of use, creating a richly textured finish that records the long history of the piece. Rustic yet elegant, its beautifully aged surface, strong proportions and authentic hand craftsmanship give it a presence that cannot be reproduced by modern furniture. The spacious interior offers excellent storage, while its scale allows it to serve equally well as a blanket chest or distinctive coffee table.
