The Bodhisattva stands in samapada-asana (Tribhanga), a posture relatively unique to his depictions; his right hand is raised to chest level and holds a vajra (Skt. Dorje), while his left hand is lowered, holding a bell (Skt. Ghanta), symbolizing the absolute and the ephemeral. He is clad in a dhoti with finely carved floral motifs, wearing an akshamala around his neck and jewelry; at the center of his crown is the seated figure of Akshobhya, the Eastern Tathagata Buddha of Meditation, the embodiment of “mirror-like wisdom” (that which is real and that which is illusory). In Tibetan Buddhism, the Vajrasattva mantra is considered to have the power to purify karma, bring peace, and inspire enlightened activity. Copper alloy, Nepal, circa 1900. (15th-century style) Provenance: Estate of collector and art dealer Claude de Marteau. Sold with certificate of provenance. H 26.5 cm x W 9 cm x D 6.5 cm Weight 1355 grams See less
