An 18th-century Piranesi etching of the "Crypts of Free Men", double sheet, Italy circa 1760.
This dramatic etching by the Italian master Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778) depicts the vaulted "Crypt of Free Men" with his signature architectural precision. The interplay of deep shadows and monumental stone reflects the Neoclassical obsession with the grandeur and decay of ancient Rome.
Circa 1760, this original period engraving captures the romantic spirit of the 18th century Grand Tour, when the mystery of Italy’s ruins captivated the world.
