Introduction

Richly coloured heather and rocky moorland unfold beneath a broad luminous sky in this intimate signed landscape by Arthur Wardle.

The painting has considerable decorative presence despite its compact dimensions. Warm russet, plum and ochre tones balance the cooler blue sky, making the work particularly adaptable to country-house, traditional and layered contemporary interiors.

Its art-historical context is equally compelling. Wardle is documented as having produced oil sketches on Exmoor, while moorland and upland landscapes recur throughout his wider oeuvre.

Wardle’s energetic handling of the foreground gives the heather and rough vegetation a tactile quality, while the pale rocky passage provides a strong route into the composition.

Comparable moorland subjects are documented throughout Wardle’s career, while standalone landscape material is recorded with provenance from his 1994 Sotheby’s studio dispersal.

A Rocky Pathway, Dartmoor, retained by Wardle and subsequently passing by family descent, provides an especially relevant comparison for the present small south-west English landscape.
