A lovely and rare museum quality faience majolica piece from French Sarreguemines. The silhouette is also reminiscent of Gullah sweetgrass techniques here in the lowcountry of South Carolina and Georgia. A true gem for majolica and sweetgrass collectors alike.
Sarreguemines is a historic French pottery factory, founded in 1790 in the Lorraine region. It gained significant international acclaim in the 19th century for its diverse range of ceramic productions, including earthenware, faience, and particularly majolica. The factory was known for its innovative techniques and artistic designs, often drawing inspiration from nature and classical motifs.
Sarreguemines majolica, produced from the mid-19th century onwards, is highly collectible. Pieces like this basket, often featuring intricate molded details mimicking natural textures such as wicker or leaves, and vibrant glazes, were popular decorative items. The "997 AA" marking likely indicates a specific mold number and possibly a decorator's mark, common for Sarreguemines production during its peak periods of output.
