This classic pair was acquired by the owners of Clover’s Cottage over 15 years ago at an estate sale in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. One piece includes an unusual note from a previous owner or possibly a Tulane University employee, written around the time Newcomb College merged with Tulane University in the early 2000's, adding to their provenance.
The note reads: “These dogs were a gift to Newcomb from Anne’s brother, Tom Lang. He had them for years. Old Staffordshire with the date 1/6/04".
They show all the hallmarks of genuine mid-19th century Staffordshire.
Our research concludes Mr. Lang, the third generation of the Lang shipping industry founder Thomas Lang was a well-known member of the New Orleans community and a frequent donor to Newcomb College and Tulane University.
