A finely executed mid-19th century Chinese export harbor painting depicting Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong, during the great transitional era between sail and steam, hand-painted on silk and laid on board, circa 1855–1870. This highly atmospheric marine scene was created for the Western export market and captures the cosmopolitan energy of treaty-port China at the height of international maritime trade.

The composition centers on a prominent American side-wheel paddle steamer flying the Stars and Stripes at the stern. The vessel features an exposed paddle housing, single smokestack, auxiliary sailing rig, and elongated low-profile hull characteristic of American steam packets operating in East Asian waters during the 1850s and 1860s. These ships transported passengers, mail, tea, silk, and silver between Hong Kong, Shanghai, and American ports across the Pacific.

To the right appears a British merchant vessel flying the Red Ensign, identifying it as part of the British merchant marine operating under colonial authority following the Treaty of Nanking in 1842. The surrounding harbor remains active with traditional Chinese junks and lorchas with battened sails, vividly illustrating the coexistence of Chinese maritime traditions alongside rapidly industrializing Western commerce.

The mountainous topography, colonial villas, and harbor traffic firmly identify the scene as Victoria Harbour rather than Canton proper. Particularly interesting is the tricolor flag atop the hill at left, likely referencing a Dutch mercantile or consular presence and emphasizing the international character of Hong Kong during the treaty-port period.

Rendered in delicate tonal washes with remarkable architectural and maritime detail, the painting retains its original gilt-decorated frame with a repeating foliate border.
