Inspired by one of the most celebrated archaeological discoveries of the nineteenth century, this exceptional Grand Tour patinated metal bowl faithfully reproduces the famous medallion of the Infant Hercules Battling the Serpents from the renowned Hildesheim Silver Treasure. Measuring 8 inches in diameter and standing 3 inches high on a raised 2-inch foot, the bowl is cast in a substantial heavy metal, likely iron or spelter, finished with a rich bronze patina that beautifully accentuates the sculptural relief.

The central medallion depicts the infant Hercules in the legendary moment that foretold his destiny. According to Greek mythology, the goddess Hera, enraged by Zeus's illegitimate son, sent two venomous serpents into the child's cradle. Rather than succumbing, the infant seized a serpent in each hand and effortlessly strangled them, demonstrating the divine strength that would later define his legendary Twelve Labors. The image became one of antiquity's most enduring symbols of courage, innate power, and triumph over adversity.

The original relief forms part of the Hildesheim Silver Treasure, discovered near Hildesheim, Germany, in 1868. Consisting of more than seventy pieces of luxurious Roman silver tableware dating from the late 1st century BCE to the early 1st century CE, the treasure is believed to have been produced in Italy for an elite Roman household and today resides in the Altes Museum in Berlin. Its discovery captivated scholars, artists, and collectors, inspiring numerous Grand Tour reproductions during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
