Braque was the prominent co-founder of the Cubism movement alongside Pablo Picasso. This work was specifically created for and published in the legendary French modernist art magazine Verve (Vol. II, Nos. 5–6) in 1939. It was printed by the renowned master printers Mourlot Frères in Paris.

The composition showcases Braque's signature late-1930s style, exploring a dual-profile or split-face silhouette. It plays with contrasting dark and light halves to merge multi-perspective abstract cubism with classical figurative art.

The piece is framed in a wood frame with a black painted finish, double-matted with decorative borders, and protective non-glare plexiglass. The framing is newer than the lithograph, likely from the early 2000s.

Known provenance: I acquired the piece from a dealer in Central California, who purchased it in the early 2000s from an art dealer with showrooms in San Francisco and Los Angeles. The piece includes the handwritten note pictured. See less
