The unidentified officer is portrayed in a dark military tunic with a deep red standing collar bearing star insignia and an impressive group of military decorations and medals. His wire-rim spectacles, direct gaze and finely modeled features give the portrait tremendous character.

Painted in oil on a rigid artist’s board or panel, the portrait displays visible hand-painted brushwork and particularly fine detail throughout the face, uniform and decorations. The dark, restrained background places all attention on the sitter.

Presented in an ornate period giltwood frame with carved foliate decoration and an inner beaded border. Both the painting and frame retain the patina and signs of age expected of an antique work.

A handsome and evocative European military portrait with wonderful decorative presence—equally compelling as a work of portraiture and as a piece of military history.
