A richly decorated 19th century Japanese jewelry box crafted in black lacquer with extensive mother of pearl inlay and gilt decoration. The front depicts figures gathered within an architectural landscape, surrounded by shimmering mosaic borders that continue across the sides and lid.
The interior retains its original tufted silk lining. The silk shows age and wear but remains an important original element of the box. There are scattered losses to the lacquer and inlay consistent with age and the delicate nature of the materials. No key is present.
