Dressed in traditional hunting attire with a feathered hat, cape and boots, the hunter rests beside his long gun and is accompanied by attentive hunting dogs and game.

The composition is particularly appealing for its wealth of naturalistic detail—the hunter’s expressive face, elaborate costume, individually modeled animals, firearm and richly textured tree-stump groundwork. The bronze retains a warm golden-brown patina with darker coloration emphasizing the modeling and details.

Mounted upon a shaped black plinth. Late 19th century, circa 1880–1900.

Gaudez trained at the École des Beaux-Arts under François Jouffroy and exhibited at the Paris Salon beginning in 1864. Period Gaudez bronzes are documented with the “A. Gaudez” signature and “Hors Concours” designation.
