The workmanship on this piece is incredible. Layers of pink, lavender, cream and natural shells create the wings and plumage, while tiny shells form the head, crest, eyes, feet and facial details. Even the long tail is composed of overlapping scallop shells. The cockatoo rests upon its original hanging perch, which has also been painstakingly encrusted in tiny shells from top to bottom.

Traces of the original painted papier-mâché surface remain visible between some of the shells, adding another layer of character and history to this wonderfully whimsical piece.
