Jay-Z Basquiat. Transformation.
This piece is inspired by the obsession Jay-Z has for Basquiat. Jay-Z believes that he is the new Basquiat and has been photographed transforming himself into the artist. In this painting Berlin has laid down his own interpretation of Jay-Z transforming himself into Basquiat. The silver leaf is symbolic of the sliver of ether between their two worlds, and the buildings are reimaginings of the buildings in ‘Empire’ the Basquiat that Jay-Z owns. As a spiritual artist Berlin has been drawn to this subject and in this painting he explores the connections between the old and new, and the living and the dead and their relevance in influencing 21st century creatives.
