Smith began making functional vessels in the … Read more A set of five rustic mugs by rural Alabama potter Norman Smith (1904-1990). Smith began making functional vessels in the 1920's in his hand built, fire-burning kilns from clay dug on his own property, continuing until his retirement in 1981. Only a small amount of his wares were ever signed or stamped, so this set is a rarity. The dark brown mugs have indications that appear to be his finger prints around the lips from being held while dipping in the glaze before firing. Each has an applied slip handle and is clearly stamped on the exterior side, N. E. Smith, Lawley, Ala. Most stamped items are from the 1970's, so I assume that's likely when these were crafted. This set could be used as intended or could be used as display, evoking earlier times when local Alabama craftsmen were depended upon for the manufacture of wares that played a very important roll in a family's day to day lives.
