A fine French Art Deco patinated bronze sculpture by Henry-Ernest Parayre (French, 1883-1970), depicting a seated mother and child in a composition of quiet monumentality and intimate human feeling. The mother’s simplified, architectural form and lowered protective posture reflect Parayre’s interwar modern classicism, balancing the reduced geometry of Art Deco with a deeply sculptural understanding of volume, weight, and tenderness. The subject belongs to one of Parayre’s important recurring themes: the nude or semi-classical human figure rendered with restraint, gravity, and timelessness.
This work is particularly significant in relation to a documented period image in the Smithsonian Libraries’ Thérèse Bonney Photographs, captioned “France, ca. 1925. Seated mother and child. Henry Ernest Parayre,” which appears to record this model or a closely related version during the artist’s lifetime. The comparison is valuable, as Bonney’s archive is an important visual record of French art, architecture, and design of the 1920s and 1930s. Parayre’s standing is further supported by museum-held bronzes in the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, including Torse de femme of 1922, Athlète of 1929, and the later Maternité of circa 1937.
The bronze bears the H. Rouard Foundry Paris mark, placing it within the production of a respected Paris bronze foundry active during the early 20th century. Rouard’s independent foundry activity is documented into the 1930s, and the form of the mark corresponds closely with other known H. Rouard inscriptions from the period. This foundry association, together with the artist’s signature and 1928 date, supports the work as a lifetime French cast from Parayre’s mature Art Deco period.
Parayre was closely associated with the Toulouse school of sculpture and exhibited in major French artistic circles, including the Salon des Indépendants and Salon d’Automne. His work is admired for its disciplined modeling, classical poise, and sensitivity to the human figure, qualities strongly present in this mother-and-child group. Comparable signed Parayre bronzes from the late 1920s, including Nu assis and Athlète, confirm both the period importance and current market relevance of his sculptural production.
