The colors are … Read more This wonderful lithograph entitled Le Lac de Saint-Cassien is characteristic of the work of Roger Muhl (1929-2008). The colors are vibrant and the style minimalist. He painted in the impressionist style capturing the atmosphere and light in his paintings. This lithograph would complement both modern and traditional decor. It is on rice paper, is signed in pencil and is number 114 of a very limited edition of only 125.

Muhl is best known for his landscape paintings of the South of France. In the tradition of Vincent van Gogh and Paul Cézanne, Muhl found inspiration for his work in the iconic, atmospheric light of southern France. Born in Strasbourg, he attended what was then the National School of Decorative Arts. He moved to Mougins in 1965, where he would live for the rest of his life. There he painted the region’s rolling hills, seaside villages, and gardens in cool, neutral hues punctuated with colors like aqua, olive, and gold that capture the characteristic light of the Mediterranean coast. Muhl’s compositions are reminiscent of Richard Diebenkorn in their ability to create a distinct sense of place using color and light. Muhl also used thick impasto to create richly textured surfaces that evoke the physicality of the scenery he depicts.

He exhibited primarily in London, Paris, Geneva, Tokyo, and New York. His work is held in the collections of museums across France and in Japan and the United States. See less
