Introduction

A compelling Chinese oil portrait depicting a smiling young child standing against a broad ochre highland landscape.

Despite its intimate dimensions, the work possesses considerable visual presence. The painter concentrates attention on the child's animated expression and raised hand, contrasting controlled figurative modelling with vigorous passages of impasto throughout the surrounding terrain.

The combination of an intriguing Chinese signature, regional subject matter and surviving Shanghai gallery label has led to substantial recent research into the painting's possible authorship.

Composition & Technique

The composition is dominated by the solitary young figure, whose warm complexion and substantial highland clothing stand prominently against an expansive pale landscape.

Red decorative elements around the neck provide a concentrated accent against the muted earth palette, while cooler blue-grey tones appear through the clothing and distant ridge.

The artist's treatment changes noticeably between figure and setting.

The face and hand receive relatively fine descriptive modelling. Across the landscape, however, the paint becomes increasingly physical and expressive, with broad ridges and heavily worked passages creating a tactile surface.

The result is both an intimate portrait and a highly decorative example of contemporary Chinese regional figure painting.

Possible Attribution to Lin Shusen

The lower-right signature is executed prominently in blue Chinese script and appears possibly to incorporate or read “树森” – Shusen.

Research into this signature, combined with the subject and painterly treatment, has identified Lin Shusen (林树森, b. 1974) as the strongest potential artist candidate.

Lin's documented oeuvre contains a substantial body of portraits depicting children and figures from Tibet and western China's highland regions.

Particularly relevant documented works include *Xiahe Shepherdess* (2011), *Zhuoma II* (2012), *Tibetan Bridegroom* (2014) and *Morning Light at Xiahe* (2017).

*Morning Light at Xiahe* offers a particularly interesting comparison through its young highland sitter, fur-edged clothing, hand raised towards the face and broad plateau setting.

The two paintings are not the same composition, and no claim is made that the present painting is a version of that work.

Instead, the similarities provide supporting comparative evidence for a possible attribution which remains unconfirmed.

The Artist – Lin Shusen

Lin Shusen was born in Quanzhou, Fujian, China, in 1974.

He established his first art studio in 1996 and subsequently became associated with the artistic community of Dafen in Shenzhen, opening Senyi Classic Gallery there in 2004.

His artistic education included advanced oil-painting study at Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, further study connected with the Repin Academy in Russia in 2012 and study at the Chinese Academy of Oil Painting in 2015.

His mature work developed a particular emphasis upon psychologically expressive portraiture, including girls, children and Tibetan/highland sitters.

Selected Exhibition History – Lin Shusen

Lin participated in the Shenzhen International Art Fair and presented a *Highland Red* themed solo exhibition at its second edition in 2013.

In 2015, 27 of his original oil paintings travelled to a Sino-American art exchange exhibition at the Sacramento Convention Center in California.

In 2018, Dafen Art Museum presented a dedicated exhibition of Lin Shusen's oil paintings.

His continuing connection with Dafen was demonstrated again in June–July 2026 when he was included among ten artists in a Dafen Art Museum group exhibition.

These records relate to Lin Shusen's career and do not constitute exhibition history for the present painting.

Yi Ren Gallery, Shanghai

The reverse retains a printed Yi Ren Gallery / 伊人畫廊 label giving the address 1483 Gubei Road, HongGu Wan Pedestrian Walk, Shanghai, together with Shanghai telephone numbers.

Independent evidence corroborates use of the Yi-Ren Gallery name in Shanghai, although the exact historical relationship between the independently recorded business and the Gubei Road premises has not yet been established.

The label does not contain an artist, title, date or exhibition number.

It therefore establishes a Shanghai gallery/retail association but does not prove that the painting was formally exhibited by Yi Ren Gallery.

Subject & Dating

The landscape has previously been described as the Gobi Desert, although this geographical identification cannot presently be documented.

A western-Chinese or highland landscape is the preferred catalogue description.

Lin Shusen is independently documented as having painted Tibetan/highland subjects and travelled through Dunhuang and the Gobi region while researching his Silk Road paintings, making the imagery consistent with his documented interests without proving the specific location represented.

The painting is catalogued as probably early 21st century. If the Lin Shusen connection is eventually confirmed, the closest thematic comparisons presently identified suggest the 2000s–2010s, particularly the period around 2011–2017.

Provenance

Bearing a Yi Ren Gallery / 伊人畫廊, Shanghai label to the verso, giving 1483 Gubei Road and Shanghai contact details; precise date and nature of the gallery's involvement unrecorded.
