Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) was a French Post-Impressionist painter who helped usher in the transition from Impressionism to early 20th-century Cubism. Although initially criticised, he gained support from artists such as Camille Pissarro and the art dealer Ambroise Vollard. In 1895, Vollard organised Cezanne’s first solo exhibition in Paris, which greatly increased his recognition.
