Simple carved details … Read more 19th century Swedish bench, crafted in pine with a warm aged patina enhanced by a waxed finish. Simple carved details accent the sides and back, giving the substantial form understated Scandinavian country character. One decorative section at the left center of the back is missing and is now worn smooth, while the remaining sections retain their scalloped form.
This traditional bench was originally designed to serve as a type of spare bed for household staff. The seat is removable rather than hinged, revealing a lower section that pulls outward and would originally have accommodated a spare mattress. Today, the interior provides generous concealed storage for blankets, pillows, shoes, or other household items.
The bench displays extensive authentic wear from generations of use. Nicks, gouges, cracks, dings, and other marks are visible across the seat, with a heavier nick along the left arm. Minor cracking is present throughout, including along the upper arms and sides, without affecting function. An old knot has fallen away from the left side. Residual signs of old wormhole activity are visible along the back and, to a lesser degree, the front; these are dry and inactive. In review of the inside photo of bench seat, it appears due to location of distress the seat base was likely upholstered at an earlier point in time.
Restored, stable, and ready to use. The bench may be used as is, or a buyer may choose to add an upholstered seat cushion.
