Original floral still-life oil painting by Francis “Duke” Downs, a longtime Palm Beach County, Florida artist.
This cheerful composition features an abundant bouquet of golden-yellow chrysanthemums arranged in a rounded vessel. Downs uses expressive, painterly brushwork and areas of thickly applied paint to build the individual blossoms, giving the flowers considerable texture and dimension.
The brilliant yellow flowers stand dramatically against a loosely painted background of soft blue, aqua, sage green and lavender. A pale pink tabletop and touches of pink reflected in the vase add another layer of color to this particularly attractive Palm Beach-style composition.
The painting is signed “F. Downs” at the lower right, clearly visible in the photographs. It is an original oil on canvas and is presented unframed, allowing the new owner to select a frame appropriate for the interior.
Francis “Duke” Downs was associated with the Palm Beach County art community and maintained a studio at Gallery One in Lake Park, Florida. His colorful Florida landscapes and floral still lifes have particular appeal for Palm Beach, coastal, traditional, grandmillennial and colorful interiors.
