Rather than the traditional upright floral still life, Downs gives this composition a sense of movement and spontaneity. A large warm copper and bronze-toned pot rests on its side while masses of freshly gathered daisies tumble from its opening and spread across the tabletop. Long green stems trail outward, several flowers extend beyond the main arrangement, and scattered petals enhance the impression of flowers that have just spilled naturally from the vessel.
The brilliant whites and touches of golden yellow stand out beautifully against the painting’s deep brown and atmospheric olive-green background. Warm illumination across the overturned vessel provides a dramatic focal point and gives the composition additional depth.
