An exceptionally … Read more A richly carved 19th-century French jardinière featuring caned panels, classical torches, abundant foliage, and four imposing urn-form finials.
An exceptionally decorative antique French jardinière or planter stand, dating to the late 19th century. The square architectural form is constructed in warm walnut-toned hardwood and embellished on all four sides with elaborate carved ornament.
Each panel is inset with traditional woven cane and centered by a deeply carved classical torch surrounded by curling acanthus leaves, flowers, berries, and ribbon-like elements. Beaded borders and continuous carved guilloche ornament frame the caning, while four large urn-form finials give the piece an especially strong silhouette.
The classical torch was traditionally associated with enlightenment, life, and enduring flame. Here, the motif is treated with the abundance and theatricality characteristic of late-19th-century French decorative furniture.
Raised on four short turned feet, the open interior can accommodate a separate planter or protective liner. It could also serve beautifully as an unusually elegant wastebasket, towel holder, or decorative container beside a desk, library table, or fireplace.
