Muir’s expressive brushwork and luminous palette give the intimate family scene a wonderfully atmospheric quality, with loosely rendered foliage and abundant blossoms surrounding the figures. A noted Maine painter, portraitist, architect and conservationist, Muir studied at the Art Students League in New York and settled in Stonington, Maine in 1939, where she maintained her studio for more than sixty years. She was the first woman to serve on the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, serving from 1955–1959. Her paintings are represented in important public collections including the Brooklyn Museum, Portland Museum of Art, Farnsworth Art Museum and University of Maine, while her papers are held by the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Art.  This substantial American figurative garden painting and family portrait is offered unframed and unstretched, ready for custom presentation!
