A soothing mid-century abstract landscape that reduces a landscape environment to a harmonious arrangement of shape, colour and atmosphere, exeucted in oil onto canvas.

At the centre, the suggestion of a solitary house emerges from the landscape, its pitched roof and shadowed facade loosely defined against an expansive, pale sky. Surrounding fields and distant terrain are distilled into broad, overlapping planes, giving the composition the quality of a landscape recalled from memory rather than directly observed.

The work has a distinctly modernist sensibility, balancing abstraction with just enough recognisable detail to anchor the scene. Architectural and natural forms are simplified into irregular geometric blocks, while softened edges allow one area to dissolve gently into the next. The unusually generous area of open sky brings a wonderful sense of stillness and space to the composition.

The palette is beautifully restrained, built around powder blue, misty grey, olive and moss green, charcoal and earthy brown. Against these muted tones, passages of dusty blush pink, turquoise and vivid cornflower blue provide unexpected flashes of colour, while a small accent of orange-red at the far right adds a particularly lively counterpoint.

Brushwork shifts between thin, softly blended passages and more substantial, textured applications of paint. The house is especially expressive, constructed through scumbled layers of brown, cream, grey and browns that allow underlying colours to remain visible. Elsewhere, broad horizontal strokes establish the landscape, while areas of dry, dragged pigment and visible bristle marks lend the surface a tactile, painterly quality. The result is a quietly atmospheric work in which landscape, architecture and abstraction sit beautifully in balance.

This oil on canvas is presented in a complementary white painted wood floater frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has minor marks.
