Initialled NW and dated 90, the work exemplifies Williams's highly sculptural approach to the vessel as a fully three-dimensional surface for form, colour and drawing.

The hand-formed ceramic construction is animated by saturated cobalt blue, orange, red, black, white, turquoise and gold-ochre decoration. Rolled and fragmented vessel walls develop into projecting fins, cylindrical forms and ribbon-like elements, while gestural and geometric decoration continues across the underside, making every surface integral to the composition.

Williams studied at California College of Arts and Crafts and worked as an assistant to influential California ceramic artist Viola Frey. His documented ceramic practice explored the vessel as a three-dimensional canvas in which interior and exterior could be experienced simultaneously, an approach particularly evident in this complex 1990 composition. The combination of deconstructed form, vivid palette and architectural construction places the work firmly within Postmodern, Memphis and California Studio Craft.
