Dating to the late 19th century, the matching urns reflect the luxurious decorative tradition associated with French Rococo Revival and Neoclassical interiors.
Each porcelain body is finished in a rich cobalt-blue glaze and decorated with colorful figural and floral reserves. Romantic cherub scenes and floral compositions create a delicate contrast against the darker blue ground, while raised enamel-style accents add further texture and decorative depth.
The urns are mounted with finely cast gilt-bronze ormolu, including sculptural mask-form handles, scrolling acanthus decoration, pedestal bases and fitted lids with decorative finials. The warm gold-toned bronze provides a striking contrast with the cobalt porcelain and gives the pair an architectural presence.
Although the urns are unmarked, their design and decoration are executed in the French Sèvres tradition and are best described as Sèvres-style rather than attributed directly to the Sèvres manufactory.
