The near-black field is … Read more A long runner in the Bakhtiari (kheshti) design, hand-knotted in northern Afghanistan from hand-spun Ghazni wool. The near-black field is divided into stacked panels, each outlined in ivory, sky blue or pale yellow: rows of stylized deer, horses and camels with saddle blankets alternate with beds of flowering shrubs, cypresses and rosettes, and a narrow floral vine border frames the whole. The palette is cooler than most of its kind: powder blue, turquoise, butter yellow, ivory and soft coral, with the black ground making every figure read like a cut-out.

At eleven and a half feet it is made for a long corridor, a gallery hall or a straight run of stairs. The dark ground and pale figures suit moody, eclectic, boho, English country and folk-art interiors, and it sits particularly well against dark walls, black-framed doors or pale stone floors.
