William Alexander Coulter (Irish-American, 1849-1936), perhaps America's most important maritime painter. Whether a painting in and of itself, or an oil sketch for a larger painting, this exhibits everything that made Coulter famous in his lifetime & today. Having spent 7 years before the mast, he had a unique, meticulous yet atmospheric sense of the sea & ports & both sail & steamships. Likely of San Francisco Bay as he lived & painted extensively in his home studio in Sausalito. Full provenance from gift by Coulter to his best friend to now. Canvas: 12" x 10".
