This 19th-century English bone china tea set for five includes five scalloped teacups, five scalloped saucers, and five scalloped dessert plates. A blue asymmetrical transferware pattern on each piece depicts wild narcissus, lilies, and foliage intermixed with stylized geometric diaper bands and fish-scale backgrounds typical of the Victorian Aesthetic Movement. Each dish also has a subtle ribbed texture that mimics the surface of a shell and reveals itself upon close inspection. Hand-painted gold borders trim the rims and handles. The British registry number dates these dishes to 1890-1891.
Our research points to Wileman and Co. (The Foley Potteries) as the most likely maker of this set, in the Kensington pattern with teacups in the popular Lily shape. The absence of other markings suggests that these dishes were white-label, made for a high-end retail store like Harrods exclusively for the British domestic market.
