Late 19th-century pastoral landscape oil painting on canvas, signed A. Millrose, depicting a flock of sheep grazing beneath mature trees beside a rural homestead, circa 1880–1900. The painting is presented in a substantial period-style wood frame with gilt-toned bands and dark molded borders.

Works signed A. Millrose appear in the auction record under the name Andrew Millrose, a 19th-century painter associated with pastoral landscapes of sheep, cattle, wooded countryside and farm scenes. Comparable signed works frequently place livestock within intimate rural settings, as seen here.

The composition is especially appealing for its depth. A great spreading tree anchors the foreground while the flock moves across the pasture toward a farmhouse and fence at right. Millrose used heavier, almost sculptural touches of paint to define the sheep against the softer greens, ochres and autumnal browns of the surrounding landscape.

JUNE'S THOUGHTS
This is the kind of painting I particularly like near a writing desk. It gives you somewhere for your eye to wander—the sheep in the foreground, that wonderful old tree, the farmhouse beyond, and finally the distant landscape. It has enough detail to keep drawing you back without making a room feel busy.

COLLECTOR'S NOTE
One interesting characteristic of A. Millrose's known work is the recurrence of sheep and cattle within quiet rural landscapes. Rather than treating the animals as incidental details, Millrose often brought them forward within the composition. Here, the thicker applications of cream and white paint give the sheep a physical presence against the more softly handled landscape.
