A European oil on canvas after Horses Tethered at a Cottage Door by Paulus Potter (Dutch, 1625–1654), probably 18th century. Executed by an unidentified artist, this later interpretation follows Potter’s composition of two working horses beside a rustic cottage, with a countryman and dog at the right.

The pale foreground horse forms the principal focus, its lowered head, harness, and illuminated flank contrasting with the darker horse immediately behind it. A substantial chimney and shadowed cottage anchor the left side, while the landscape opens toward a distant settlement beneath an expansive, cloud-filled sky. Warm earth colors and golden light balance the cooler blue passages overhead, giving the modest rural subject a carefully structured sense of depth. The painting is presented in a molded black-painted wooden frame with gilt inner ornament and a narrow gilt outer edge.

Potter’s original is held by the Musée du Louvre in Paris, inventory number INV 1731, under the title Deux Chevaux près d’une auge devant une chaumière. Painted in oil on wood and signed and dated 1649, it measures 25.5 × 23.5 cm. The Louvre identifies the distant city as Delft and currently lists the painting in Room 849 of the Richelieu wing, Level 2.
