Introduction

A richly atmospheric Victorian British landscape by Stephen Enoch Hogley (1842-1927)*depicting Borrowdale in the English Lake District.

The painting offers a particularly appealing combination of landscape, colour and period framing.

Warm golden ochres, deep olive and forest greens, russet browns and earthy tones dominate the valley, contrasted by cooler blue-grey and muted violet hues across the distant fells.

The original gilt frame complements the warmer palette and gives the work a strong decorative presence.

Catalogue Note

The farmer and cattle provide scale and movement within the composition before the eye travels towards the wooded valley and mountains.

Shorter descriptive brushstrokes define the foreground, while broader, freer handling develops through the middle distance.

The distant fells are treated more softly, allowing the blue-grey and violet tones to merge into atmospheric haze.

The prominent fell may possibly represent **Glaramara or part of the Glaramara massif**, although this remains provisional.

Borrowdale

Borrowdale is celebrated for its contrast between intimate pastoral scenery and dramatic mountain forms.

That contrast gives this painting considerable visual depth and makes it effective as a decorative focal point.

The Artist

Stephen Enoch Hogley was a Yorkshire-born British landscape painter trained under Peace Sykes.

He studied drawing at the Holmfirth Mechanics' Institution and developed a career centred on landscape painting in oil and watercolour.
