A wonderfully sculptural French majolica Palissy ware covered tureen dating to circa 1950. Modeled as a large crab, the piece features a rich deep red glazed shell surrounded by realistically formed legs and claws in mottled red, cream and green, with dramatic black tipped pincers.
The removable upper shell forms the lid and lifts to reveal a generously sized cream glazed serving bowl. The highly dimensional construction and vivid glazing continue the naturalistic Palissy ware tradition, making this as appealing as a decorative object as it is unusual serving ware.
