Italian Grand Tour Neoclassical Verde Antico Marble Farnese Hercules
A Grand Tour Neoclassical sculpture of the Farnese Hercules, Italian, 19th century, carved in Verde Antico marble with gilt-metal mounts. Executed by an unidentified sculptor, the figure depicts the muscular hero resting against his club, over which the Nemean lion’s skin is draped. His inclined head, deeply carved beard, and relaxed stance convey the weariness characteristic of the celebrated ancient model.
The Verde Antico marble presents a dark green ground enlivened by olive and lighter green mottling. Its polished surface brings depth to the natural coloration while emphasizing the rounded modeling of the torso, shoulders, and limbs. More textured carving distinguishes the lion’s skin and rocky support, creating a considered contrast between the figure’s smooth anatomy and its surrounding attributes.
The rectangular stone base is furnished with gilt-metal corner mounts incorporating scrolling ornament and animal paw feet. Their warm finish complements the richly colored marble, giving this reduction of an antique subject the decorative presence associated with Grand Tour collecting and Neoclassical cabinet sculpture.
The sculpture retains an important Christie’s auction label, marked “19 MAR 97 / Sale 7993 / Lot 257,”. This surviving label provides a specific documentary link to its auction history and authenticity.
