An English oil on canvas portrait of a gentleman, painted around 1780-1800, gives its unnamed sitter an unusually warm, direct expression for the period. His dark hair is unpowdered, worn loose and softly curled rather than dressed in the more formal powdered styles common at the time. He wears a brown coat over a pale waistcoat, with a white cravat tied high at the throat.
The painting is set into a limed pine frame with ogee molding and a linen filet.
