Standing … Read more An impressive oversized vintage Peugeot pepper mill, made in France and dating to the mid-20th century, likely circa 1950s–1960s. Standing an extraordinary 22 inches tall, this substantial restaurant-scale mill has a beautifully turned beechwood body with commanding sculptural presence.

Long predating Peugeot’s celebrated Paris model, introduced in 1987, this imposing mill represents an earlier generation of the French maker’s renowned pepper-grinding tradition. Peugeot has manufactured pepper mills since the 19th century, and by 1975 its extensive collection already included 23 models offered in approximately 70 variations.

The Wood & Patina
The beautifully turned beechwood body has developed a warm honey-brown patina with rich variations in tone and grain. Decades of age and use have left appealing surface character, including scattered marks, light scratches and finish wear. The underside retains an intriguing old mint-green/turquoise painted finish with age-related wear.

The Peugeot Mechanism
The underside retains its substantial original Peugeot steel grinding assembly, prominently stamped “PEUGEOT FRANCE” and bearing Peugeot’s historic Lion on an Arrow emblem. The mechanism turns smoothly and remains functional. Peugeot’s celebrated pepper mechanisms use hardened steel and a two-stage grinding principle designed to first crack and then grind the peppercorns.

At 22 inches / approximately 56 cm tall, the dramatic scale transforms a utilitarian culinary object into an exceptionally decorative piece. Wonderful displayed on a kitchen island, large dining-room server or open shelving, and particularly appealing to collectors of French culinary objects and vintage Peugeot. See less
