A matched set of six Franciscan Madeira soup/cereal bowls, produced in the United States between 1967 and 1983. Each bowl corresponds to the documented SOCE form within the Madeira pattern and measures approximately 7 inches in diameter by 2 inches high.
The earthenware bowls are finished in the characteristic Madeira palette of a dark brown ground with tan floral decoration and a subdued olive-green band. The broad, low form has a gently flared rim and short circular foot, combining substantial earthenware construction with the casual California dinnerware vocabulary associated with Franciscan's late-1960s design period.
Madeira was introduced in 1967. The shape was designed by California ceramicist Rupert Deese, while the pattern and decal design are credited to Jerry Rothman. These documented design attributions place Madeira within Franciscan's important postwar California production rather than generic brown dinnerware of the period.
The undersides carry Franciscan Madeira backstamps supporting both the pattern identification and United States manufacture. The six bowls form a complete matched group of the documented 7-inch soup/cereal form.
