A mid-twentieth-century French regional folk-art handled bowl or decorative coupe associated with Gex and the Col de la Faucille in the Pays de Gex/Jura region of eastern France. The lower exterior bears the hand-incised geographic inscription “Gex La Faucille.”
The vessel is carved from hardwood in an open handled form with two integral projecting grips. The exterior combines several decorative techniques, including faceted or chip-cut lower panels, dark incised or pyrographic botanical ornament, dense rows of small dark metal studs, larger circular bosses or rosettes, and smaller brass or gold-tone leaf and floral elements.
The decoration is unusually concentrated. Darkened linework outlines stylised botanical sprays across the warm-toned wood, while the applied mixed-metal ornament creates a highly textured surface. The bowl remains intentionally open at the top, with a continuous finished rim and no apparent shoulder, flange or seat intended for a lid.
The inscription establishes a strong geographic association with Gex/La Faucille.
