"The Lute" is an original color lithograph by French-American painter Charles Cobelle (1902–1994), hand signed in pencil and numbered from … Read more "The Lute" is an original color lithograph by French-American painter Charles Cobelle (1902–1994), hand signed in pencil and numbered from an edition of 500. The composition sets two women in the foreground of a terrace, one holding a lute against a spray of flowers and foliage, the other in a wide-brimmed hat. Behind them a Beaux-Arts building facade rises in rose-red line work, crowned by a winged figure, with ornate globe street lamps framing the scene at either edge. The palette runs to pink, marigold yellow, emerald, and orange laid down in loose washes.

Cobelle was born Carl Edelman in Alsace-Lorraine and trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he worked under Raoul Dufy. Dufy's airy, decorative line is the clearest influence on his work, and Cobelle is often described as a late inheritor of the Open Line School of Paris. He emigrated to the United States in the 1930s and spent a long career between New York and the south of France, painting Parisian cafés and boulevards, harbor views, and musical and equestrian subjects. His paintings and prints are held in private collections internationally.
