A crowned young man embraces a red-haired mermaid, her pale green tail curling across the foreground as she cradles an armful of roses and daisies. A yellow bird perches beside them, a violinist plays from a cloud of foliage at upper left, and swagged theater drapery frames the scene from above. Behind the couple, a Paris riverfront unfolds: a monument column, a Seine bridge lined with ornate lamps, and a row of rooftops washed in red and yellow. The palette of chartreuse, turquoise, rose, and scarlet sits loosely beneath open black line work — the calligraphic drawing and high-key color that define Cobelle's mature work.

Cobelle was born Carl Edelman in Alsace-Lorraine and trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he worked under Raoul Dufy. Dufy's airy, decorative line is the clearest influence on his work, and Cobelle is often described as a late inheritor of the Open Line School of Paris. He emigrated to the United States in the late 1920s and spent a long career between New York and the south of France, painting Parisian cafés and boulevards, harbor views, and musical and romantic subjects. His paintings and prints are held in private collections internationally.
