A central musician in a yellow ruffled costume and red button boots stands beside a tall scrolled string instrument, an open songbook forming the collar and a grandfather clock, pendulum swinging, set into the body of the costume. A lute balances on the figure's head, and a great pale bird perches on top of it, wings spread. To the right, a red-haired nude plays a violin on a flower-filled urn, while a trumpeting figure tumbles headfirst through the air and fish drift across the sky. The scene sits in a garden terrace of blue, green, and slate gray, with a balustrade and pedestal urn along the bottom. The loose washes and open ink line reflect Cobelle's grounding in the School of Paris.

Cobelle was born Carl Edelman in Alsace-Lorraine and trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he worked under Raoul Dufy. Dufy's airy, decorative line is the clearest influence on his work, and Cobelle is often described as a late inheritor of the Open Line School of Paris. He emigrated to the United States in the late 1920s and spent a long career between New York and the south of France, painting Parisian cafés and boulevards, harbor views, and musical and romantic subjects. His paintings and prints are held in private collections internationally.

In very good condition and never framed. Pencil signed and annotated AP lower right.
