This antique oil on … Read more A late 19th century English painted landscape with sailboat from artist William Gilbert Foster (British, 1855-1906). This antique oil on canvas depicts a tranquil river view with tree-lined bank in the foreground, a moored sailing vessel on still reflective waters, and distant rolling hills beneath a cloud-filled sky. Signed lower left "Gilbert Foster." The composition is rendered in soft tones of sage green, golden ochre, warm earth browns, pale blue, and creamy white, accented by muted red sails. The painting is housed in a period giltwood frame with stepped molding, floral-running ornament, and a naturally aged, attractive patina. Please note that there are some chips, wear, and small area of inner trim missing at frame, consistent with its age. Foster specialized in atmospheric river, coastal, and rural landscapes painted in a naturalistic late Victorian style. His works reside in numerous British museum collections. See less
